Have you ever found yourself sitting on the dynamic “shelf” in a relationship, just waiting to be picked? You’re sitting there, hoping that special someone looks down at you and decides you’re finally worthy of their time, while you settle for whatever little breadcrumbs they toss your way.
If this hits close to home, take a deep breath. You aren’t alone, and this doesn’t define who you are. It simply shows where you’re at right now. But if you’re tired of being the “sure thing” or the backup plan, it’s time to unpack why this happens and how you can step back into your power.
Here are three core reasons you’ve become an option—and how to start choosing yourself instead.
The first reason is that you’re putting your own purpose, path, and desires below someone else’s. Whether it’s your career, travel plans, creative passions, or simply who you want to be in this world, you’ve put it all on the back burner just to please them.
Why do we do this? Often, it traces right back to childhood. You might have felt the need to chase the approval of a parent or guardian just to feel safe and loved. In doing so, you learned to abandon yourself.
Remember: Being loving and supportive of a partner comes from a full cup. Putting your life’s journey on hold to make someone else’s experience more important isn’t love—it’s self-abandonment. When you do that, you teach the other person that you’re a “maybe” who will always be waiting around.
When you’re in a healthy space with strong self-value, you give love from an overflowing cup. But when you’re operating as the “sure thing,” you’re overgiving and over-accommodating.
It becomes all about them:
Your thoughts constantly revolve around their needs, not yours.
You bend over backward to keep them comfortable.
You leak your energy out energetically, constantly thinking, stressing, and trying to fix things.
When you pour endlessly into someone who isn’t matching your energy, you end up attracting people who take, take, take. It doesn’t mean they’re inherently terrible human beings, but it shows they are operating from a place of scarcity—and you’re letting them feed off your empty tank.
At the very bottom of the stack, holding this entire pattern in place, is a lack of deep self-worth. It’s that quiet inner voice asking: Am I good enough? Am I lovable? Am I actually wanted?
To heal this, you have to get out of your head and into your body. When you read the words “not good enough” or “not chosen,” what physical sensations do you feel? A tightness in your chest? A pit in your stomach?
When we ignore those feelings, we act like a hopeful puppy sitting by the door, begging to be chosen. Healthy relationships aren’t about one person standing above the other and making a selection. It’s about two people with strong self-worth choosing each other.
If you’re ready to take yourself off that shelf, here is how you can begin shifting your energy today:
Flip the Question: Stop asking, “Will they pick me?” and start asking, “Does this person align with what I want to experience in my life? Do I choose them?”
Tune Into Your Body: Start paying attention to physical sensations when you feel undervalued. Your body speaks to you—listen to it instead of running from it.
Do the Core Inner Work: You have to clear what’s underneath the surface. Tapping (EFT) is one of my absolute favorite tools for this because it helps release deeply ingrained beliefs around self-worth and love.
You deserve to be fully chosen, not kept on standby. If you want to dive deeper into building your core self-worth, check out the linked EFT Tapping video on self-worth and knowing your value attached to this post to get a taste of how it works.
